Details: Although little known to the general public, the birdcage motif occupies a special place in the world of Chanel. Gabrielle Chanel had one in her apartment at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris. It is a discreet object that the House has continually reinterpreted in its campaigns and fashion shows.
In 1991, Jean-Paul Goude created an iconic advertising film for Chanel, starring Vanessa Paradis, then aged 20. Suspended in a huge cage like a bird, she embodied freedom, beauty, and fragility, in keeping with the spirit of Chanel.
More than three decades later, during the Spring-Summer 2025 fashion show, a huge open cage was installed under the nave of the Grand Palais, reaffirming the notion of freedom, a recurring theme in the history of the House.
As Gabrielle Chanel said:
“People have always wanted to lock me in cages: cages padded with promises, golden cages, cages that I touched without looking at them. I never wanted any cage other than the one I would build myself.” The notions of confinement and independence come together to become a symbol of emancipation.
